While Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper may not be throwing touchdown passes or scoring game-winning goals (we’ll leave that to the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres), for 35 years we’ve proudly been protecting and restoring the waters that make Western New York home. And just like our hometown teams, this work is only possible because of a passionate community standing behind it.

One of the greatest examples of what’s possible when a community comes together is the Buffalo River. Once declared “dead” in the late 1960s, the River has been transformed through decades of restoration led by Waterkeeper alongside dedicated partners and supporters. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, revival, and pride for our region — a waterway our community can once again call home.

That same spirit drives our work every day. From restoring habitat and protecting drinking water to caring for creeks, shorelines, and headwaters across the watershed, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper is working to ensure every waterway in our region is healthy, accessible, and thriving for generations to come.
