The concept of creating a sports hall of fame for Buffalo was brought to fruition in the fall of 1990 by local businessman John Kapelewski. Incorporated as a non-profit organization, the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame held its inaugural induction dinner in 1991. Proceeds from the Annual Induction Dinner benefit the Amateur Sports Development Fund (ASDF).
Created in 1993 to support Buffalo’s effort to host the World University Games, the ASDF has provided grants to WNY athletes, teams and organizations through funds generated by the annual GBSHOF Induction Dinner. Since 2022, the Amateur Sports Development Fund has awarded $69,000 to 39 organizations in support of more than 6,600 youth, adaptive and amateur athletes. Overall, approximately $270,000 has been distributed to nearly 200 local organizations and individuals since 1993.
“It’s truly what we’re all about,” notes President John Maddock. “This is our way to give back to the community and to help our area athletes, groups and teams reach their full potential in their athletic endeavors. It’s a wonderful way for us—and our corporate partners—to be the ‘12th man’ to many of the area’s best.”
The GHBSHOF is now on permanent display at Dave and Adam’s Card World, located at 8075 Sheridan Drive in Williamsville, NY. The new location provides the general public the opportunity to view memorabilia from all Hall of Fame Members during Dave and Adam’s normal business hours.
We provide tribute and honor to the outstanding athletes who participate in sports in the Greater Buffalo Area. Through our annual induction ceremony we support amateur sports development locally by providing grants to those in need of financial support.
