Adaptive sports for athletes with disabilities
The sled Hockey Foundation was founded in 2015 by three time gold medalist Paralympian Adam Page. Adam wanted to give back to the community. The goal was to help Athletes with disabilities have access and affordability to the sport of sled hockey. Soon after the foundation was formed we knew we needed to expand to give disabled athletes the opportunity to play other sports. We formed a wheelchair lacrosse team in 2017. In that first year of playing wheelchair lacrosse as the Buffalo Bandits Wheelchair Lacrosse team we held the National Wheelchair Lacrosse Tournament here in Buffalo.
As our foundation grew we knew we needed to change our name to reflect what we were accomplishing. Under Greater Buffalo Adaptive Sports we have the following sports that we offer to athletes: Wheelchair Lacrosse Youth {first program in the country}, Stand-up Adaptive Lacrosse {athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities} First one in the country, Blind Hockey{Lions Club}, Wheelchair Football. We collaborate with the following programs: Wheelchair basketball youth, Touching Bases, Rochester Accessible Adventures, Motion Project, Wounded Warrior Project, Hand Cycling, Canal Side, River Works, Corner Stone Arena, and The North town Center.
We are working on bringing Wheelchair Curling, Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball Adult, Adaptive Pickle Ball, and Adaptive Golf to the foundation.
To provide opportunity for individuals with disabilities to participate in adaptive sports and , through this participation develop the social , emotional and physical confidence necessary to become leaders in the community
