For more than 165 years St. Mary’s School for the Deaf has served the deaf and hard of hearing community from all eight counties of Western New York. Did you know that our hometown school on Main Street in downtown Buffalo provides access to the highest quality education and therapeutic programs, providing students with the necessary tools to help them communicate with each other and the outside world? SMSD serves deaf children from birth to 21 years of age. We are proud to offer programs that address the needs of all our deaf learners including students pursuing NYS Regents diplomas, vocational programs, and special needs programs. Each program is tailored to produce the best outcomes for each student. The future success of St. Mary’s is dependent on donations from caring community members like you Now More than Ever.
SMSD - a child first school - is fully accredited through the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). Our specialized expertise provides exemplary education to deaf, deaf/blind, and severely disabled children.
We are proud of the thousands of students who have crossed through these doors since the School’s opening in 1853. SMSD graduates are provided with the opportunity to realize their full potential. Graduates attend college and receive Bachelorette and Advanced Degrees; they enroll in work programs and choose from a variety of paths including employment and state-assisted programs. Our Alumni include nationally recognized adults who go on to succeed in all facets of life.

The Mission of St. Mary’s School for the Deaf's Foundation (also known as the Foundation for Deaf Education, Inc.) is to improve the quality of life for students at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf. To accomplish this, the Foundation supports initiatives that:
- Fund School programs and activities not covered by legislative appropriation
- Promote public awareness of the School and Deaf Culture
