“Sarah” called our office recently wanting to know how to get the programs we broadcast. She said she is blind, has autism, and lives in a group home with four other residents like herself.
Sarah said she had an Alexa smart speaker, so one of our staff was able to talk her through the process of telling Alexa to “open the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service.” It took only a few minutes over the telephone.
She gasped - and said she could hear the newspaper that was broadcasting over the air. And then she started to cry.
Sarah said she was so excited to get our programming. She thanked us over and over again. And she called later to say all the residents in her group home were now listening to the 24/7 readings of local and national newspapers, magazines and best-selling books broadcast every day.
Outreach to prospective listeners is a major priority you will help support with a donation to your Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service through Give 716.
Sarah is one of more than 130,000 people in the Western New York-Rochester-Southern Ontario region with vision loss, physical or learning disabilities, or other reading challenges who would benefit from our broadcasts - if we could only reach them.
It's easy to receive our programming - and free. Just contact us. If you can't read or turn the page of printed material, you can listen to it. We’ll bring a special radio or smart speaker right to your home or set you up listening to our programs on the internet or through our mobile app. No cost, no complicated forms or technology, no worries.
Everyone deserves equal access to the news and knowledge available to the general public. This information is essential to live and thrive as engaged members of the community and world - and doesn't everyone deserve that?
_____
It costs money, however, to operate radio studios, maintain broadcasting equipment, provide special radios to listeners, manage our wonderful volunteers, and spread the word throughout the region - all with just 3.5 staff members and an annual budget of only $300,000.
It costs about $118 to provide service to one of our listeners for a year. Won't you help sponsor one of them now with a donation to your Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service through Give 716.
You could open up someone's world!
The Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service is a nonprofit 24/7 radio station where volunteers read newspapers, magazines, books, and other publications over the air and online so people across Western New York and Southern Ontario who are blind or have other conditions that make reading a challenge can remain fully informed, engaged members of their community. Learn more here: Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service (youtube.com). And remember, our programming is also now available online at www.nfradioreading.org and through our iOS and Android mobile apps.
