Every Artifact Has a Story. Every Gift Helps Tell It.
Founded in 1921 originally as the Lockport Historical Society, the Niagara History Center has continued to serve as a vital steward of Niagara County's and the Erie Canal region's diverse and complex history and culture. Through a vast collection of artifacts, historical documents and ephemera, and photographs, alongside immersive, engaging, and accessible programming opportunities, the History Center fulfills its mission and vision to educate and enrich the public and maintain its status as a dynamic hub for historical and cultural engagement as well as lifelong learning for the community.
The Niagara History Center operates three primary sites that consist of seven total buildings. These sites - the Main Campus at 215 Niagara Street, the Erie Canal Discovery Center at 24 Church Street, and the Col. William Bond/Jessie Hawley House at 143 Ontario Street - assist in the preservation of the thousands of artifacts and ephemera as well as providing dynamic programming areas for visitors of all ages.
The Niagara History Center preserves, promotes and interprets the diverse cultural heritage of the people, places and events related to Niagara County and the Erie Canal. We are a collaborative community resource for lifelong learning for current and future generations.
