Ronald McDonald House Charities® Piedmont Triad operates a 36-bedroom “home away from home” that provides lodging for families of seriously ill children who come to Winston-Salem seeking medical care. Families staying in the House have children being treated at Brenner Children's Hospital at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist and Forsyth Medical Center. Cheerful bedrooms, nourishing home-cooked meals, laundry facilities, parking, areas for recreation, and support from professional staff and other guests in similar circumstances are provided through the House. Patients are referred by a doctor, nurse, or social worker in our service area. In 2022, 718 families from 50 North Carolina counties and 10 other states stayed at the House.
Families are asked to cover just $10 per night, however no one is turned away due to inability to pay (63% of our guests are unable to pay this small fee). The difference between the cost to operate each room and the amount paid by our families is funded through community donations provided by individuals, corporations, foundations, churches, and civic groups. Donations of in-kind goods worth thousands of dollars allow the House to enhance the services provided to families and to reduce expenditures in program, administrative, and fundraising areas. Examples of major in-kind gifts include yard work and landscaping, food donations (individual serving sized items and home-cooked meals), laundry service, toys, and paper goods. Volunteers support the staff and families by assisting in meal preparation, guest relations, special events, and office and housekeeping duties. Sport a Shirt, Share a Night, Character Breakfast, and Light a Luminary are annual events held to support RMHCPT.
The day services of the House are offered in our three Family Rooms located at Brenner, Forsyth, and Cone Health and are open to all pediatric families receiving care in these facilities. Additionally, seven hospitality carts with snacks, beverages, activities, and comfort items are offered, free of charge. These carts roll at partner hospitals and medical centers.
